Met Gala is Cancelled
It's official, this year's Met Gala has been cancelled. After the COVID-19 outbreak early this year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that they would be postponing this year's gala until further notice.
The Met announced on Tuesday that this year’s event has been called off entirely, following the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s mid-March decision to close its doors and postpone the glitzy ball “indefinitely” in the face of the virus pandemic.
President of the Met museum, Daniel H. Weiss said, “the Met has endured much in its 150 years and today continues as a beacon of hope for the future.
This museum is also a profound reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of art to offer comfort, inspiration, and community. As we endure these challenging and uncertain times, we are encouraged by looking forward to the day when we can once again welcome all to enjoy the Met’s collection and exhibitions”.
However, a virtual celebration was held via Vogue's YouTube channel, and boasted appearances from everyone from Anna Wintour to Florence Welch. While the Met will throw a belated 150th birthday bash for itself next year, after it is safe to reopen to large crowds, the state of next year's Met Gala remains in the balance.
The gala was initially scheduled to be postponed but was later then announced cancelled "due to the global health crisis” with the rise of coronavirus cases around the world.
