Guard of Honor
A guard of honor is when a group of people standing in line to congratulate the opposition on an achievement. Every season, there will be guard of honor for the team who confirmed as a champion. The event happens before the start of the game when the players going out to the pitch from the dressing room tunnel, it is seen as a sign of respect.
It is not compulsory for any team to give guard of
honor if they face the newly crowned League champions because it is a ceremony
agreed between the two clubs beforehand. If the players refuse to do it, they
cannot be forced to do it by the footballing association.
The guard of honor already exist since the 1955 where Manchester
United provided one for Chelsea. The Red Devils continue the tradition in 1991,
as they congratulate the Gunners’ league title win by giving them guard of honor
at Highbury Stadium.
Manchester United have a long history of respecting their
opponents and they also honored Chelsea lifting the Premier League trophy back
in 2005. In respond, Chelsea did the same for United two years later when they
win the league. Everton also once congratulated United’s title success on the last
day of the season in 2003 at their home, Goodison Park.
The tradition remains strong in England because the
showmanship in the English Premier League is something else. It’s another story
in other parts of Europe top league, for example Spain, even the guard of honor
still exist in La Liga, the tradition are not always been followed.
