With weddings on hold and summer holidays a distant dream, clothing rental has fallen dramatically since the pandemic began. It was seen as a more  cost-effective and sustainable alternative to shopping.   Several new British companies launched, loaning luxury clothes and accessories, and reporting exponential growth in their first years of trading.  H&M and Ganni were among the first retailers to begin trialling a rental model back in 2019, while several new platforms including  Hurr Collective  and  My Wardrobe HQ  have launched pop-ups in department stores over the past year.  Then the lockdown happened, shops shuttered, events cancelled, diaries cleared. Major Brands Are Creating Scholarships for Black Students

Major fashion and beauty brands are continuing their efforts to support the  Black Lives Matter  movement with scholarships and mentorship programs specifically for Black students.  Brands  such as  Adidas ,  Gucci  and  Virgil Abloh  of Off-White and Louis Vuitton men’s have responded to the recent protests surrounding the police killings of unarmed Black people across the country and the  Black Lives Matter  movement by launching scholarship opportunities for Black students in fashion and other industries. Italian fashion brand, Gucci, announced a new global program and scholarship fund, called Gucci Changemakers, that will promote diversity and inclusion throughout the company with a multi-step action plan.  The program includes three separate tiers: the Gucci Changemakers Fund, a scholarship program, and a company-wide volunteering initiative. Forced online for the first time in its history by the coronavirus pandemic, brands both in haute couture and the Paris men's fashion week presented videos of their collections instead. Many fashion critics have expressed their disappointment after the showcase of the first ever digital Paris fashion week. Amongst them was international fashion blogger and fashion critic, Diane Pernet, who was not taken by any of the early offerings. “I am sorry, I think they can do more,” the Paris-based American told AFP. “I am all into digital, but it is not doing it for me,” she added.  However, head men's buyer for top French department stores Galeries Lafayette and BHV Marais, Laurent Coulier, could see otherwise. “The great advantage for us compared to a normal fashion week is the time we save,” he told AFP.  He also liked how some labels, like Y/Project and the young Paris brand Egon Lab had used their films creatively to show the uniqueness of their clothes. Paris Designers Make BLM Plea

Designers  Rushemy Botter and Lisi Herrebrugh, who both have Caribbean roots,  made an impassioned plea for the Black Lives Matter movement through the Dutch brand, Botter, at Paris men's fashion week. The designers  who were also runners up in the prestigious LVMH Prize in 2018,  delivered a heartfelt plea for people to "unite against violence on the black community, against violence on any community" as they unveiled their online show.  With being forced online due to the coronavirus, brands showing short films about their collections on Paris Fashion Week. Rushemy Botter was born on the island of Curacao, part of the Dutch Caribbean, while his partner Herrebrugh's mother hails from the Dominican Republic. Vogue Facing Racial Problems?

Famous magazine, Vogue, has been facing serious and quite obvious racial problems over the years. In 2017, Vogue was under fire for their "WOMEN RULE : Fashion's Fearless Females" March issue, when they featured model, Karlie Kloss, in Japanese traditional attire as a geisha. According to The Cut, the theme of the issue that was said to be about "diversity", however the meaning it was not clear and the magazine failed to portray as such.  The editorial which was titled  “Spirited Away”,  was shot by photographer Mikael Jansson in Japan and styled by Phyllis Posnick.  The shots also features Kloss, among other things, posing in designer clothing with a sumo wrestler, visiting a tea house and carrying a basket of cherry blossoms . Many were annoyed as to why Vogue had chose a white model to appear as a geisha instead of an actual Japanese model. Now you can often find various of colourful and unique designed face masks while browsing the internet. Face masks are becoming the new must-have fashion item , from small accessory to big business, e ven some of the most legendary fashion houses like  Prada, Louis Vuitton and Dior are getting  involved.  Not only that, these fashion houses  are sewing face masks exclusively for medical workers, turning production facilities that made fancy gowns into mask-creation locations. It's official, this year's Met Gala  has been cancelled. After the COVID-19 outbreak early this year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that they would be postponing this year's gala until further notice.  T he Met announced on Tuesday that this year’s event has been called off entirely, following the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s mid-March decision to close its doors and postpone the glitzy ball “indefinitely” in the face of the virus pandemic. President of the Met museum, Daniel H. Weiss said, “the Met has endured much in its 150 years and today continues as a beacon of hope for the future.  This museum is also a profound reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of art to offer comfort, inspiration, and community. Rosmah Sues for Mishandling of Luxurious Handbags?

Former first lady, Rosmah Mansor has demanded and threatened to sue the government after her previously owned luxurious handbags which were said to be bought by the public's money,  suffered serious damage after being seized by police. Rosmah had caught public eye for her  notorious for her spendthrift ways. After the shocking defeat of Najib in the 2018 election, the couple were both charged with corruption.  In raids on properties linked to the pair, police seized more than 500 top-range handbags and over 12,000 pieces of jewellery, in which t he items were estimated to be worth more than US$270 million. The couple who was represented by lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said police had subsequently written exhibit numbers on the bags with permanent marker and "showed absolutely no respect for the goods". Birkin handbags are always a classic. Admired by fashion enthusiast and celebrities alike. However, this 100-pound Birkin bag is stone-carved and is surprisingly still cheaper than the real thing. The bag is carved by Barbara Segal who carved the bag out of stone like orange calcite. Segal is a graduate of Pratt University and started making product models for Avon Cosmetics in the 1980s. Her hand-carved bags are true to size and detailing of the original bag and it also includes the status tote's signature leather folds, tight stitching and even the lock. Segal polishing her stone-carved Birkin Bag She acquired materials from all over the world, including the Grand Canyon to a region in Iran. A bag typically takes her 3 months to finish.
