Importance of Football Development

Sports development program is a long-term project to produce young talents in sports that can possibly bring any country's name at world level tournaments especially in football. Many ways and ideas have been highlighted by stakeholders to create appropriate programs; this is coupled with the support from the government that inject funds to ensure that such development programs continue.

The early history of national football development program started in 2010, shortly after Malaysia won the AFF Cup that year. The initial idea is to create a development program at that time, the idea came from Datuk Razali Ibrahim, the Minister of Youth and Sports at the time. Past executions such as MyKid Football Camp were made to identify young talents throughout the country by recruiting players as young as 11-years-old and forming a squad, this first batch was targeted to qualify for the Under-17 World Cup in 2019. The very first program was headed by Lim Kim Chon who acts as the technical director of the program and at the same time acts as the technical director of FA Malaysia.

In 2013, YB Khairy Jamaludin created a new and more systematic development program, the National Football Development Program (NFDP). Every effort made to create this program by auditing first for over 6 months to identify what needs to be done in the development of football from bottom to top. At the same time, Lim Kim Chon's younger brother, Lim Teong Kim, was approached by YB Khairy Jamaludin to be the director and head coach for the national football development program at that time.

This program is done in order to fill the shortage of young talents that should be done by clubs or football societies, those who are supposed to produce young talents by creating their own football academy. Among the youth elite academies under the NFDP started at the District Training Centre (DTC), those who perform the best at DTC will be brought to the Tunas Academy. For those who performed the best at Tunas Academy will be placed at the State Sports School and National Sports School. The highlight, the best player in the league from each level will be selected to be absorbed into the Mokhtar Dahari Academy (AMD), only those who are best can be absorbed into the AMD.
This program has proven that Malaysia has a big pool of football talents, many people said that it is impossible to take Malaysia on the same level as other world top football country but NFDP has proven to them wrong. This is because, there are two NFDP trainees being accepted in France's top football club academy, Paris Saint Germain. All of this can be improve if every professional football club in Malaysia has their own football academy, but many of them don’t want to do this kind of thing by reason of the development of football requires a lot of money but at the same time they are able to invest millions in getting import players at senior level.

All these development efforts should be done together, so that we may realize our national team to have players of international level. But there are still many people who want to exploit all the efforts made because of the big funds channelled by the government and because of that there is also a misuse of power. After only 4 years NFDP were executed, they were criticized for failing to reach the Under-17 World Cup, after that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) said that they wanted to take over the NFDP themselves saying they were more qualified to run NFDP after years not engaging with NFDP. Former NFDP CEO Safirul Azli Abu Bakar stated that "since the establishment of the NFDP in 2014, FAM should be involved more technically. This is my opinion; I think FAM does not want to be involved if they have no control over the program as a whole "

It may be a bit controversial but that’s the reality, the development of sports is very important but the involvement of all stakeholders is essential to realize the dream of everyone to produce football players of international standards that can bring Malaysia to win the Asian Cup and also to qualify for the World Cup in the future.
